SUNBURY COMMUNITY HOSPITAL UPDATE

On Tuesday, September 3rd, operation commenced in the dialysis wing of the Sunbury Community Hospital.

Dialysis patients require treatment several times a week, for several hours at a time, posing significant impacts on a patients’ livelihood.

Providing these critical services at the Sunbury Community Hospital means that patients in our local community are able to access the care they need close to home, with stronger links to specialist care.

When expansion and upgrade works are complete, the hospital’s capacity will be expanded to provide a greater range of public urgent care services.

Community hospitals will help take pressure off Victoria’s major public hospitals and emergency departments, supporting doctors, nurses, and allied health professionals to prioritise the most unwell patients – and improve treatment and waiting times.

I am proud to be delivering these important upgrades to the Sunbury Community Hospital – and thank you to staff and patients for recently spending time with me to truly understand and appreciate the impact of these health services close to home.

About the Sunbury Community Hospital

Managed by Western Health, the Sunbury Community Hospital will be a single-storey expansion and refurbishment of the current Sunbury Day Hospital on Macedon Street. Western Health operates the Sunbury Day Hospital which has been treating patients since February 2011.

When expansion and upgrade works are complete, the hospital’s capacity will be expanded to provide a greater range of public urgent care services. The urgent care services will be supported by diagnostic services including x-ray, ultrasound rooms and CT scans, pharmacy and pathology services, and a central wait area. Day Medical has also been expanded to include additional chairs to treat patients in dialysis and oncology.

These additional services will sit alongside the existing day surgery, chemotherapy, and dialysis services already available onsite.

In 2024 the Growth Areas Infrastructure Contribution (GAIC) provided additional funding to support Western Health to uplift its dialysis capability which will be accommodated in the new dialysis space being delivered as part of the community hospitals project.

The Sunbury Community Hospital will operate extended business hours. It will not operate 24/7 and will not have overnight beds. The exact operating hours will be determined by the managing health service – Western Health.

More life-threatening emergency care, complex acute care, major procedures, or overnight stays will be supported by nearby major hospitals, including Sunshine Hospital and the Northern Hospital in Epping.
