COMMUTER CAR PARK ONE STEP CLOSER FOR SUNBURY
The Victorian Government is making it easier for Sunbury locals to catch the train with the new multi-deck car park at Sunbury Station set to improve parking and access to public transport.
The new car park will offer more than 300 additional commuter car parking spaces plus more than 200 spaces for shoppers and traders.
The new car park will feature accessible parking, enhanced lighting, and secure bike storage.
The station car park construction tender will open soon with construction on the project expected to start from late 2021. The project is jointly funded by The Victorian Government and Hume City Council, which will also lead delivery of the project.
The Sunbury station car park upgrades are being delivered as part of the Car Parks for Commuters Program, a state-wide program helping to deliver 11,000 new and upgraded car parks across Victoria. These additional car parks will free up local streets, generate jobs, and make it easier to catch the train. Learn more about the program at carparks.vic.gov.au
The Victorian Government has delivered almost 10,000 new and upgraded car parks across the state since 2014.
Along with upgrades to car parking, work will also begin this year on the Gap Road level crossing removal after the project gained planning approval last month.
The Gap Road level crossing will be replaced with a new rail bridge and a road underpass on Gap Road/Station Street between Horne Street and Evans Street, including a shared path on both sides to provide a safe connection for pedestrians and cyclists.
It will be delivered in conjunction with the $2.1 billion Sunbury Line Upgrade, which has allowed construction on the crossing to be brought forward by two years and will help minimise disruption to the community.
The Sunbury Line Upgrade will prepare the line for bigger, more modern trains that will run when the Metro Tunnel opens in 2025, giving passengers access to five new stations in Melbourne’s CBD, Arden, Parkville and St Kilda Road.
Upgrades to suburban roads in Melbourne’s north-west are progressing, with major construction to add 17 kilometres of new lanes on Craigieburn Road between Hume Highway and Mickleham Road due to get underway in the coming months.
A construction partner will be appointed for the Sunbury Road Upgrade this year, with these improvements increasing capacity and connecting communities to the booming Sunbury town centre.
Planning is also underway for future major road upgrades in Melbourne’s north. Improvements to the Calder and the M80 Freeways as well as the Bulla Bypass will reduce congestion and improve travel times in the area.
Other upgrades to Mickleham Road, Somerton Road and Craigieburn East Road will improve journey time, safety and connections to the rail network.
