The Andrews Labor Government is taking action to ease congestion and improve safety at the Gap Road and Horne Street intersection in Sunbury.
Member for Sunbury Josh Bull today announced the Government is providing $6.4 million to convert the existing roundabout to a fully signalised intersection.
The upgrade will include dedicated turning lanes from all directions, signalised pedestrian crossings and bicycle lanes on all approaches.
Footpaths surrounding the intersection will also be connected to the new intersection, allowing local residents to safely access nearby shops, schools and public transport.
The intersection carries large volumes of traffic with around 21,500 vehicles per day travelling on Horne Street and 18,000 vehicles on Gap Road and is a key connecting route to Riddell Road, Sunbury Road and the Calder Freeway.
A railway level crossing is located nearby on Station Street, around 150 metres east of the intersection, which often results in long traffic queues and delays at the roundabout, particularly during the morning and afternoon peaks.
Works on the project are expected to be completed by mid-2018.
